Toney Burger played shortstop on the St. Edward’s University baseball team from 1929 to 1930. In 1938, he was named the baseball, basketball and assistant football coach of Austin High School and became one of the most successful coaches in Austin history. He was a coach at AHS for 15 years and later became athletic director of AISD for 18 years. The Toney Burger Activity Center on US-290 West is named in his honor.
