Jack Chevigny was a football star at the University of Notre Dame from 1926 to1929, and served as the team’s backfield coach until he received his law degree in 1931. While playing in the 1928 game versus Army, Chevigny made the touchdown exclaiming, “Here’s one for the Gipper!” after the famous half-time “Win one for the Gipper” speech by Knute Rockne. He became assistant coach under “Hunk” Anderson following the death of Knute Rockne and became the head coach of the NFL Chicago Cardinals after the 1931 season. Chevigny came to St. Edward’s University in 1933 and guided the team to the Texas Conference championship. In 1934, he was named the head coach at the University of Texas, where he served for three years. Chevigny was working in the oil industry in 1943 when he decided to join the Marine Corps. He died as Captain Jack Chevigny on the first day of fighting at Iwo Jima on Feb. 19, 1945.
