In the 1956–1957 season, Beck was named honorable mention All-America. He began his coaching career at St. Edward’s High School and later joined St. Edward’s University. In 1965, he became the head basketball coach and held that position for nine seasons. As a student-athlete, he held the high scoring record for a single game of 42 points until it was broken by one of his players, Zeke Everett, in 1974. He was coach of the year in the Big State Conference in 1971.
