Metzger came to St. Edwards in 1967 on a baseball scholarship and soon demonstrated his proficiency as a shortstop. He was named a NAIA and Sporting News All-American, an Outstanding College Athlete of America and as a first alternate to the 1968 U.S. Olympic baseball team. Roger was a first round draft pick for the Chicago Cubs but ended up playing professional baseball for the Houston Astros for seven years and later for the San Francisco Giants until 1980. In 1973 he won MLB’s Golden Glove Award at the shortstop position. He is currently a teacher at the Brenham State School.
