Men’s Track & Field Rounding Into Form, Returning to Health

| By:
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – St. Edward's men's track and field continues to move closer to a healthy roster and round into form, getting several personal-best performances from across the roster at the Carl Kight Lumberjack Invitational.

"It was a solid weekend for many of the guys, but we have to get healthy," St. Edward's Head Track & Field Coach Steven Cary says. "We're still a ways away from reaching our potential as a group, but most of that is health-related, not effort."

ARLO GONZALES continues to steadily build on a strong first season, following a personal best in the 10K the previous meet with a new personal standard in the 5K at 15:02.86, placing 11th.

"Several guys set the tone with some quick performances on Friday night. We saw some good improvement from Josiah and Braden," Cary says. "In the 5K, Arlo continues to break down barriers. He's running confidently and it showed on Friday."

TYRIQ WILSON returned to action after missing the previous meet, placing sixth in the 200 with a time of 21.77. Wilson was also part of the 4x100 Relay Team alongside CRISTIAN MENDOZA, MARCUS AGUINALDO, and ANDRE MOORE, combining for a time of 42.05.

WILLIE ODEM led six Hilltoppers in the 800 with a time of 1:57.55, and AJ PENA, BRADEN COX, and JOSIAH GUAJARDO followed with personal bests at 1:58.79, 2:01.72, and 2:02.48. Guajardo also recorded a personal best in the 1500 at 4:13.08.

"We mixed up the 4x100 order for the men on Saturday and will probably continue tweaking that order. We've been consistent no matter who is running, which is good," Cary says. "We also saw some good performances from Tyriq on the sprints side. He's running consistently in the 200, so I'm excited to see how we progress there. All the 800m guys looked the strongest they have all season."

Mendoza led three Hilltopper sprinters in the 100. He and GEORGE SHELTON set personal bests at 11.20 and 11.50. Shelton also ran a personal-best 23.51 in the 200.

"We're improving every week in different areas," Cary says. "I just want to keep that going over the next three weeks."

The sprinters will travel this week to participate in the Jim Mize Invitational hosted by Louisiana Tech. St. Edward's entire team will return to the track on Saturday, April 26, for the J. Fred Duckett Twilight hosted by Rice University.
