Hilltopper Baseball Assistant Coach Chris Young headed to the San Diego Padres

AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team will say goodbye to assistant coach Chris Young who has accepted a job within the San Diego Padres organization. Young will be a professional scout for the Padres beginning immediately. Young will attend Spring Training with the Padres beginning in February. After Spring Training, Young will then be scouting Minor League Talent ranging from all levels of Minor League Baseball. "I would like to thank Rob Penders and the St. Edward's University Athletic Department for the opportunity to be a part of their program these past two and a half years," Young said. "The things that I have been taught by Rob and the kids in this program will stay with me forever." Young also stated that, "I couldn't be more excited abut this opportunity the San Diego organization has presented me. While I will truly miss working with our outstanding student-athletes at St. Edward's, I look forward to this new stage in my professional career and the challenges it will bring." Young has been the pitching coach for the last two seasons on the Hilltop. During his tenure, he coached four pitchers selected to the all-Heartland Conference Team, one all-region pitcher and one Major League Baseball draftee. Jonathan Burns, the team's closer for 2009 and 2010, was selected in the 26th round by the Atlanta Braves. Hilltopper Head Coach Rob Penders on Young: "I am truly happy for Chris. He has been offered a wonderful opportunity in professional baseball that not many people get a chance to do. To get this job, it says a lot about him as a person and his work ethic. He accomplished great things here at St. Edward's and he will serve as a great ambassador for our program in all his future endeavors." The Hilltoppers open their season Feb. 4th when they host Arkansas-Fort Smith. The doubleheader is set for a noon start at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
