SPRING, Texas – Former St. Edward's Men's Golf All-American Nick Cristea was named 2013 Amateur of the Year by the Southern Texas Section of the Professional Golf Association (STPGA) on Monday.
Cristea has been a major achiever on the Austin and Houston amateur scene since graduating from St. Edward's in 2007. In year's past, Cristea has won the Harvey Penick Invitational and Horseshoe Bay Invitational. This year, Cristea has been highly successful. In the Medalist Association's Champion Energy Standings, Cristea is currently in second place. This includes a win at the 2013 Cypress Lakes Stroke Play Championship where he holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a one-shot victory. He also finished fourth at the Meadowbrook Farms Stroke Play Championship and tied for seventh at the Blackhorse Stroke Play Championship.
While at St. Edward's, Cristea was a two-time Academic All-America selection and capped off his career his senior season as a third-team all-America selection and as Heartland Conference Player of the Year.
