AUSTIN, Texas. – St. Edward's continued its success Monday afternoon, winning its fourth consecutive game, and avoiding a loss for the ninth-straight contest, as they rolled past Rogers State, 2-0 at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
St. Edward's (9-2-1, 4-0 HC) would get off to a fast start. In the 33
rd minute of play,
SAM BURNS would make a gorgeous move down the left sideline. Burns would loft a cross into the box, only to find the head of teammate,
ANDREW FOX. Fox, the Hilltopper leading goal scorer, knew exactly what to do with it, finishing the job, and giving his team an early 1-0 lead.
DANIEL RILEY also received an assist on the play for his pass ahead to Burns.
Less than two minutes later, Fox would be involved in another scoring opportunity. Fox, dribbled to the end line down the right side of the field and played a ball into the box. There he connected with his teammate,
JOSH TAYLOR, who would one-time the ball into the net for the Hilltoppers second goal of the game.
For the remainder of the first half, and into the second, the Hilltopper defense would be the story. Rogers State (5-6, 1-2 HC), who was coming off an incredible 15 goal performance, just a game earlier, would be held to only one shot on goal, and St. Edward's goalkeeper,
KEVIN LEIB, would not be tested for the majority, as the Hilltoppers went on to win, 2-0.
St. Edward's, who is currently ranked No. 23 in the country, will quickly turn its attention to its massive Saturday afternoon showdown against perennial powerhouse, #18 Midwestern State. Less than a month ago, the two teams tied 1-1 in Wichita Falls, Texas, and know the importance of the upcoming matchup.
"Both sides know the upcoming game is crucial. This game will have an immense impact on postseason opportunities. The staff and I know their team very well and their coaches know us as well. The game will be settled on the field by the players," head coach Brian Young said.
The Hilltoppers will take on the Mustangs starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Lewis-Chen Family Field. Live coverage and video will be available through the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
