Â
"These seniors have been very close since day one. Even the players who arrived late have been accepted into the family. The group has very strong ties and will be missed," Head Coach Nick Cowell said of his senior class.
Â
After the game kicked off,
KATIE DONAHUE would be presented with a corner kick, and the first scoring chance for the Hilltoppers in the 11
th minute of play. Donahue curled the kick and surprisingly, placed it into the side of the net to give her team an early 1-0 lead.Â
Â
St. Edward's (11-4, 7-0 HC) would threaten numerous times in the first half; however, were unable to find another goal.
Â
St. Mary's (8-8, 4-4 HC) would find its best scoring opportunity of the game in the 34
th minute, as forward Lauren Peck was left one-on-one with St. Edward's goalkeeper,
LORRIE SANTOY. Peck would blast a shot toward Santoy, who would show why she was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team this past week, recording her biggest save of the day, as the halftime score stood, 1-0.
Â
As the second half began, St. Mary's would come out determined to level the score, as they began to gain momentum and possession of the ball.
Â
The Rattlers took numerous shots and cornerkicks early in the second half. However, in the 68
th minute of play, Rattler Megan Tomlin, would be awarded a straight red card for an unsportsmanlike penalty, leaving her team a man down, and putting the momentum back in the Hilltoppers favor.
Â
For the remainder of the game, St. Edward's failed to find another goal. However, the back line would hold strong and the Hilltoppers, who would go on to win, 1-0.
Â
With this victory, the Hilltoppers clinch at least a share of the Heartland Conference regular season Championship, pending Monday's matchup against Texas A&M-International. With a win, or a Dallas Baptist loss, the Hilltoppers will win the conference outright. Kickoff for Monday's contest will be noon at Lewis-Chen Family Field. Live video and stats will be available through the Hilltopper Athletic Website.Â
