Final Results
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The St. Edward's men's golf team claimed first place in the San Antonio Shootout on Tuesday after posting a third round of 295 to finish with a total of 895. The Hilltoppers (298-302-295=895) were two strokes better than second place Lee (Tenn.) (288-312-297=897). Central Oklahoma (298-305-297=897), Midwestern State (306-304=610), and Heartland Conference newcomer Oklahoma Christian (299-306-301=906) rounded out the top five.
DILLON VAN ESSEN (71-77-72=220) had St. Edward's top performance and finished third overall. In the third round, the freshman made birdie in five of his first eight holes. He would hang on down the stretch to shoot even par. This was his third top-five performance of the season.
"Dillon got off to a hot start which gave the rest of the team some confidence," said Coach
Todd Ohlmeyer.
ANDRES RODAS (73-74-75=222) had the Hilltoppers' next best score and tied for sixth overall.
"Andres was playing in the group behind Dillon and saw him make a lot of putts which is always nice to see."
BRIAN SMITH (74-75-74=223) tied for ninth overall as he played steady golf throughout the tourney.
JOSE HERNANDEZ (80-76-74=230) improved by two strokes from his previous round and tied for 27
th overall. He shot even-par on the back nine coming in.
JAY HOGAN (83-81-76=240) improved by five strokes on the final day and tied for 60
th overall.
"I am very happy for the guys today," said Ohlmeyer. "They put themselves in a good position by playing so solid at the start. This was a solid win over a field filled with top teams from within our region."
The victory was the second of the season for the Hilltoppers and they now own a 70.2 percent winning percentage.
St. Edward's will return to action for the St. Edward's Invitational beginning March 3.
The tournament will be played at the Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin, Texas.
