AUSTIN, Texas – On a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon, the St. Edward's Men's Soccer team looked to add a prominent win to its resume against #15 Metro State, only to fall short. A disputed penalty kick goal gave the Roadrunners a 2-1 overtime victory at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
In the third minute of play, St. Edwards (1-2) found themselves with the first chance of the match; however, the shot from Andrew Fox found the hands of Metro State goalkeeper, James Tanner.
While the Hilltoppers missed its early opportunity, Metro State (2-0) capitalized on its first shot of the game, giving them a 1-0 lead, 13 minutes into the contest. The goal was scored by Josh Belfrage, his first of the season, and assisted by Jeff Gillis.
In poor playing conditions the Hilltoppers had no room to surrender another goal. St. Edward's goalkeeper, Kevin Leib, did all he could to keep it that way, stopping a promising breakaway attack between himself and Metro State forward, Brock Labertew.
The tremendous save by Leib in the 30
th minute, seemed to spark the Hilltopper offense. Nearly one minute later, Colton Stymiest found Pablo Covarrubias, who ripped a shot from 18 yards out, tying the game, 1-1.
In the remaining 14 minutes of the half, the Hilltoppers recorded four shots to the Roadrunners one, none of which found the back of the net. More importantly, the intensity of play heightened, as 13 total fouls were awarded in the first half, setting the stage for a physical second half battle.
The physicality picked up right where it left off, as six fouls were given in the first eight minutes of the second half. The Hilltoppers executed its second half strategy, dominating the ball as well as opportunities at the net; however, were unable to capitalize.
"We played well enough to win the game. We had numerous chances in regulation," head coach Brian Young said.
In regulation, the Hilltoppers outshot the Roadrunners, 15-10, while receiving 10 corner kicks to Metro State's three. Of those shots, Fox and Josh Taylor both recorded four.
In the end, 90 minutes would not be enough to separate these two teams. Golden-goal overtime was set to begin as the rain began to amplify.
Two minutes into overtime, the 36
th foul of the physical contest was called against the Hilltoppers; unfortunately, it was called inside its own box and a penalty kick was awarded to Metro State.
Metro State's Dustin Berg was called upon to take the kick. As Berg approached the penalty shot, all 108 fans at Lewis-Chen Family Field were on their feet. Both teams stood tall in the downpour and Lieb was asked to make his biggest save of the early season. As the whistle blew, Berg approached the ball, struck it left into the upper-90 off of Leib's hands, and the Roadrunner bench stormed onto the field while the Hilltoppers fell to their knees heartbroken.
The Hilltoppers will look to bounce back Wednesday as they take on Texas A&M-International in a non-conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Dustdevil Field. Live video and stats will be available on the Dustdevil Athletic Website.
