St. Edward’s rallies past Texas A&M-International, 2-1

LAREDO, Texas – St. Edward's overcame an early one-goal deficit with two second-half goals defeating Texas A&M-International Wednesday night, 2-1 at Dustdevil Field.

Not having produced a win in Laredo since 2008, St. Edward's (2-1) faced a difficult task. In the 10th minute of play, and for the third time this season, the Hilltoppers surrendered the first goal of the match, granting itself with an even tougher task.

In the remainder of the first half, St. Edwards managed three shots on goal while Texas A&M-International (3-2), put two on frame. At the end of a quiet first half, the Hilltoppers would need an impressive second half to overcome the challenge at hand.

Five minutes into the second half the Hilltoppers found the foot of its leading goal scorer, Pablo Covarrubias, who deflected a shot off the keeper for his third goal of the season, tying the game at one a piece in the 51st minute.

Less than seven minutes later, Hilltopper Andrew Fox found teammate Josh Taylor in front of the net, who blasted in his first goal on the young season to give St. Edward's a 2-1 lead at the 58th minute mark.

The Dustdevils would not lie down quietly on its home turf and tested the defensive front for the Hilltoppers in the closing 10 minutes of the game. Texas A&M-International got five shots off and was awarded three corner kicks in that span, only to be denied by the defense.

Before the start of the game, St. Edward's had recorded 36 shots, 13 shots on goal, and managed only two goals. While the opportunities have presented themselves, the Hilltoppers have failed to capitalize on the majority of its chances.

"We have played well enough to be 3-0 coming into today's match, but have not been able to convert our chances," head coach Brian Young said before today's contest. "Tonight we created chances and finished. I'm proud of how my guys fought back, they wanted this win."

The Hilltoppers will look to build upon its progress and carry its momentum into Saturday's match against West Texas A&M at 7 p.m. in Canyon, Texas. Live stats and video will be available on the West Texas A&M Athletic Website.
