Hilltoppers fall in tight contest with West Texas A&M, 2-0

AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's Men's Soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field.

West Texas A&M (8-4) was the aggressor early as it had three shots in the first 20 minutes, placing all three at goal with Hilltopper goalkeeper KEVIN LEIB making a save.

St. Edward's (9-2-2) finally got things rolling offensively in the 24th minute when DYLAN ARMSTRONG got off the first shot. Then in the 38th minute, the Hilltoppers had three-straight cornerkicks and a shot by OWAIN HOSKINS. But all could not produce a goal for the home team.

In the 42nd minute, West Texas A&M drew a foul about 40 yards from the goal. After the free kick was sent into the box, the ball came free right to the feet of Conrad Goulbourne. The Buff beat Leib one-on-one from the doorstep.

In the second half, both teams had even chances with each producing three shots in the first 20 minutes of action. St. Edward's would then start to pepper the West Texas A&M defensive end with the ball. The Hilltoppers tallied four cornerkicks and a handful of long throw-ins. The only problem is they could not get the ball into the net.

In the 84th minute, Hilltopper defender RYAN DENDINGER picked up his second yellow card and was ejected from the match. Down a man for the rest of the match, the Hilltoppers fought hard. With everyone up for a last gasp long throw; which included Leib, the ball trickled away from the goal. Christian Suthers would race past everyone and put in the clinching goal to make it 2-0 with just nine seconds left.

West Texas A&M outshot St. Edward's 10-7, and four shots on goal compared to just one for the Hilltoppers. The home team had eight cornerkicks while the Buffs had just two.

St. Edward's will be back in action Thursday when they get back to Heartland Conference play with a matchup versus UT-Permian Basin. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Lewis-Chen Family Field. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
