Final ResultsHURRICANE, Utah – St. Edward's sophomore
JOHANY RIVERA equaled her first round with another even-par 72 to take home medalist honors at the Dixie State Invitational Tuesday afternoon. The Hilltoppers, as a team, finished in ninth place at the Par-72, 6,010 yard Sand Hollow Golf Course.
Rivera came into the final round in a three-way tie for second place. She trailed the leader, Sonoma State's Alexis Hayes by one stroke. Rivera bested them all by at least three strokes. This was the second individual victory of her career, as she also won last season's Heartland Conference Tournament.
For the tournament, Rivera led the field of 73 golfers in par-4 scoring at one-under. She was also tied for third in par-5 scoring at one-under par. She carded a tournament-best eight birdies during her two rounds.
"I was very disappointed with our team play this week, but pumped for JoJo and her first win of the season," St. Edward's Head Coach Jennifer McNeil said. "Shooting even-par out there was a true testament to how great of a player she is."
St. Edward's (311-314=625) dropped from seventh to ninth place in the final round but spots three through nine were all within four strokes. Point Loma (302-307=609) held onto its first round lead to take home the title. They bested the field of 13 teams by 10 strokes.
Also competing for St. Edward's were
ISABEL MORALES (80-79=159), who is tied 29
th place, while
JESSICA TAMEN (82-79=161) and
SANDY LIVAS (77-84=161) are tied for 38
th place.
TAYLOR DILLINGHAM (82-87=169) ended the tournament tied for 58
th.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Monday when they travel to take part in the Incarnate Word Fall Invitational. The two-day, 36-hole event will take place at the Republic Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas.
