KELLY ANDRUS put second-seeded St. Edward's Women's Soccer team past third-seeded Lubbock Christian, 1-0, and in to the championship match on Sunday.
St. Edward's (13-4) was the early aggressor as it placed three shots at goal in the first 11 minutes of action.
JENNIFER BOUDREAU had an excellent opportunity in the 11
th minute when she got in behind the defense and was one-on-one with the Lubbock Christian goalkeeper. The keeper made the save and
WHYTNEIGH DUFFIE's follow attempt was saved by the Lady Chap defense.
During the first half, both teams would take four shots and their keepers made two saves.
In the second half, St. Edward's wasted no time going forward. In the 47
th minute, Andrus chased down a loose ball back in the Lady Chap defensive end. Andrus then chipped a shot over the Lubbock Christian goalkeeper who had come off of her line. The goal was Andrus' third of the season.
From that point on, both teams did not have a shot on goal as the majority of play stayed near midfield.
"Lubbock Christian has a great offensive team, and we were able to shut them out for a second time," St. Edward's head coach Nick Cowell said. "That is a testament to our defense. The field was pretty heavy, so it was tough to get much going offensively. We hope to be able to possess the ball better in the final."
The victory advances the Hilltoppers to the championship game of the Heartland Conference Tournament for the fifth-straight year since the tourney restarted in 2011. They will face rival Dallas Baptist for the fifth time in the medal match. St. Edward's has fallen to Dallas Baptist twice this season, but own a 3-1 record against the Patriots in the Tournament Championship history. The only other time DBU has hosted the tourney was in 2011, when the Hilltoppers downed the Patriots, 2-1.
Sunday's championship will kickoff at 1:00 p.m. at Patriot Soccer Field. Dallas Baptist defeated St. Mary's in the other semifinal matchup. The match will have live video and stats on the Patriot Athletic Website.
