Final ResultsLAKELAND, Fla. – The St. Edward's men's golf team started the final day in a tie for 13
th place in the Matlock Collegiate Classic at the Lone Palm Golf Club. The Hilltoppers shot a one-over par 289 in round two to move up to a tie for 10
th place, but the momentum ran out as they slipped back down to a tie for 13
th place by the end of the third and final round Tuesday.
The tournament featured some stiff competition as six of the top-10 teams nationally were in attendance. Nova Southeastern (1), USC Aiken (2), Barry (4), Lynn (6), St. Leo (9) and Columbus State (10) are all ranked in GolfStat's Top-10.
St. Edward's (303-289-307=899), playing in its first tournament of the spring season, rebounded from a slow start in round one to shoot a one-over 289 in round two. The 289 was the fifth-lowest of round two. Round three was not as kind as they registered a 307.
Nova Southeastern (277-280-281=838) took home the team championship followed by Barry (284-280-284=848) in second place. Lynn (281-283-294=858) ended in third place.
DILLON VAN ESSEN (80-69-72=221) rallied after struggling in round one to play the last two rounds at three-under par to lead the team. The sophomore finished the tournament playing the par-five holes at seven-under par and tied for 33
rd place overall.
ANDRES RODAS (73-75-74=222) played consistent golf throughout and ended tied for 40
th place.
JOSE HERNANDEZ (77-73-79=229) finished tied for 57
th place, while
PAUL DRINKWATER (74-76-82=232) tallied a tie for 63
rd place and
JAY HOGAN (7972-82=233) finished tied for 65
th place.
Barry's Adam Svensson (67-67-70=204) won medalist honors as he was below par in all three rounds.
St. Edward's will be back in action Feb. 23-24 when they travel to compete in the St. Mary's Invitational. The two-day 72-hole event will take place at the Dominion Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.
