Final ResultsSAN ANTONIO, Texas – The St. Edward's Men's Golf team moved up two spots in the final round to finish fifth at the St. Mary's Invitational Tuesday afternoon. The tournament was held at the Dominion Country Club in Northwest San Antonio.
St. Edward's (314-299=613) knocked 15 strokes off of its score from day one to pass Newman and Southwestern Oklahoma State and move up two spots. Rogers State (306-293=599) moved up to overtake Western New Mexico (305-298=603) on the final day. St. Mary's (317-292=609) ended in third place, while UT-Tyler (310-300=610) placed fourth.
"We have had a number of really good individual performances this year," head coach Todd Ohlmeyer said. "I am anxious and excited for when we get them to all happen at once."
JOEY HEARN (75-75=150) started the round off on a positive note. The sophomore stuck a wedge from six yards out to within 10 feet on the ninth hole. He would roll in his 10-foot putt for birdie. After two bogeys and two double bogeys, Hearn rebounded with a birdie on hole seven to finish in a tie for seventh.
JOSE HERNANDEZ (75-80=155) finished tied for 27
th, while
DILLON VAN ESSEN (80-79=159) ended in a tie for 49
th place.
JAY HOGAN (84-72=156) and
ANDRES RODAS (84-73=157) both rallied in round two. Rodas moved up 20 spots on the final day to finish in a tie 41
st. Hogan had the biggest increase of any golfer in the tournament on the second day as the sophomore moved up 27 spots to finish tied for 34
th place. Hogan was three-over par after eight holes but rallied with a birdie on hole one and an eagle on his final hole of the day. Hogan hit a five wood to within 25 feet, and then drained the putt that had about a five-foot break.
"Joey played very consistent this week in extremely difficult conditions," Ohlmeyer said. "Jay and Andres did a great job today showing their potential."
Also competing for St. Edward's as individuals were
ANDREW LIU (80-74=154), who tied for 22
nd place and
PAUL DRINKWATER (78-79=157) finished tied for 41
st place.
St. Edward's will be back in action March 9-10 when they host the St. Edward's Invitational in Austin, Texas. The two-day 54-hole event will take place at Onion Creek Country Club.
