Final ResultsAUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's Men's Golf team faced some tough competition in its own tournament, but navigated its way to a fourth place finish in the St. Edward's Invitational Tuesday afternoon at Onion Creek Country Club.
Included in the strong regional field was out-of-region opponent Nova Southeastern. The Sharks (272) came into the tournament as the top-ranked team in the nation. They did not disappoint, finishing in first at eight-under as a team. Heartland Conference foe Rogers State (278) finished in second place with Western New Mexico (284) placing third. The Hilltoppers finished just three strokes behind the highly-ranked Mustangs with a team score of 287.
St. Edward's had several strong outings from its players as
DILLON VAN ESSEN,
JOSE HERNANDEZ and
JOEY HEARN all shot 72 on the day. Hearn's back nine was particularly impressive as he fired a two under and registered three straight birdies between holes 11, 12 and 13. The three combined to tie for 19th place.
JAY HOGAN had an impressive round that featured three birdies on the front nine to finish his day at a 71.
ANDRES RODAS struggled through the front nine, but rebounded to shoot par on the back nine and finish the day tied for 48
th with a 74.
PAUL DRINKWATER stole the show today as an individual player. Drinkwater fired par on all but three holes, however his birdie on holes six and 18 helped him finish the day with a very impressive one-under 69. Drinkwater finished the tournament tied for sixth place, just three shots back of the tournament champion.
"We accomplished what we needed to do today by beating a number of teams from our region," head coach Todd Ohlmeyer said. "We had some nice finishes as
DILLON VAN ESSEN and
JOSE HERNANDEZ birdied a couple of their final holes, which was the difference from us finishing fourth or fifth. Paul has played solid lately so it was good to see him play well today." Ohlmeyer went on to say, "It gives us a little confidence going forward into the St. Mary's tournament."
The tournament was originally scheduled to be a 54-hole competition, but Monday's two rounds were cancelled due to inclement weather.
St. Edward's will be back in action Monday when they travel to take part in the Rattler Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be hosted by St. Mary's at the Republic Golf Club in San Antonio. Live scoring will be available on the Rattler Athletic Website.
