LUBBOCK, Texas – If Friday's doubleheader wasn't entertaining enough, Saturday Heartland Conference softball matchup between St. Edward's and Lubbock Christian proved to be even better. The two teams combined for 31 hits, eight home runs and 27 runs scored. The Hilltoppers dropped the series finale, 15-12, to the Lady Chaps, but did not go down without a fight.
St. Edward's (17-12, 5-4 HC) opened the game with four runs in the first inning.
FAITH ROBERTS singled in a run and
MORGAN DUFOUR launched a three-run homer to right field.
Much like yesterday, Lubbock Christian (20-6, 10-1 HC) had an answer. The Lady Chaps put up five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-4 lead.
Roberts singled in two runs in the second inning to give the lead back to the Hilltoppers, but it was short-lived as Lubbock Christian pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the third inning, 7-6.
In the fourth inning, Dufour had an RBI-single and
CYDNEY ERVIN wanted to join the hit parade with a two-RBI single to put the Hilltoppers up, 9-7.
Lubbock Christian answered in a big way this time, as the home team tallied three runs in the bottom of the fourth and five more in the fifth inning for a 15-9 advantage.
St. Edward's tried to rally down the stretch, with Dufour notching a two-run home run in the sixth and Roberts adding a solo shot in the seventh. That was not enough as the Lady Chaps held on for the 15-12 victory.
Even thought the Hilltoppers dropped all three games of the series, they were outstanding at the plate. Dufour was 5-for-10 with three home runs and eight RBI, while
ALEX MAYFIELD was 5-of-11. Roberts scored five runs and drove in five more. The Hilltoppers pushed across 22 runs in the series and registered six home runs.
St. Edward's will be back in action Friday when they host conference-leading Texas A&M-International. A single game on Friday at 3 p.m. will open a three-game series that will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon. All three games will feature live video and stats on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
