Final ResultsDALLAS, Texas – The St. Edward's Men's Golf team finished up the final round of the DBU Patriot Classic Tuesday afternoon, shooting a 303 to take home fifth place honors. The tournament was held at the Par 72, 7,013-yard Hackberry Creek Country Club.
St. Edward's (290-290-303=883) came into the final day in fourth place, playing alongside NAIA powerhouse Texas Wesleyan (291-292-297=880) and Heartland Conference rival Dallas Baptist (292-294-299=885). The Rams passed up the Hilltoppers in the final round, but St. Edward's held off the Patriots for fifth place. St. Edward's holds a 5-2 advantage head-to-head against the Patriots this season.
Cameron (288-284-296=868) won the team title, outplaying second-place Central Missouri (288-289-294=871) and third-place Oklahoma Christian (289-289-294=872).
JOSE HERNANDEZ (66-77-73=216) led the Hilltoppers with a tie for seventh finish. This was his third top-10 finish of the season and 17
th of his four-year career on the Hilltop. Hernandez played the front nine at one-over par, but steadied himself on the back nine to shoot even-par.
DILLON VAN ESSEN (74-73-72=219) had the best round of any Hilltopper on Tuesday, as the sophomore carded three birdies to shoot even-par. His round included a birdie on the final hole. That is something the 2014 All-American did in all three rounds. He would tie for 13
th place.
JAY HOGAN (76-70-77=223) finished the tournament tied for 23
rd place, while
JOEY HEARN (74-70-82=226) ended tied for 34
th place. Andre Rodas (80-86-81=247) tied for 79
th place. Playing as an individual,
PAUL DRINKWATER (77-72-73=222) shot a final-round, one-over par to end tied for 21
st place. Drinkwater birdied the final two holes for a 73.
Garrett Fey (67-71-72=210) of Dallas Baptist won medalist honors with a six-under par for the entire tourney, while Oklahoma Christian's Sam Johnston (70-72-70=212) shot four-under to finish as runner-up.
That wraps up regular-season action for St. Edward's. They will now take two weeks off before heading to Horseshoe Bay for the 2015 Heartland Conference Championship. The Hilltoppers won the championship last season. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be held at Slick Rock Golf Club. Live stats will be available on the Heartland Conference website.
