AUSTIN, Texas – The sixth-ranked St. Edward's Women's Soccer team rebounded from its first defeat to take down fifth-ranked Bridgeport, 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
In a match that stayed near midfield for both teams, it was St. Edward's (4-1) who had the first opportunity. In the 14
th minute,
ALEXIS MORELEON hustled to a clearance by the visitors and played it ahead to
JENNIFER BOUDREAU. The junior forward tried a run down the left side and lifted a shot to the far post that beat the Purple Knight keeper.
From that point on in the first half, both teams had equal chances. Bridgeport (5-1) would have the only shot on goal but
LORRIE SANTOY turned it away.
In the second half, it was Bridgeport who was the aggressor. The Purple Knights outshot the Hilltoppers, 5-1, and had three of those on goal. Santoy proved her worth with three huge saves.
With time winding down, St. Edward's got its second goal of the match in the waning seconds.
LAUREN HELLER drove down the left side with five seconds and launched a shot from distance that beat the keeper in the far left upper-90 for the final tally.
Bridgeport outshot St. Edward's, 9-5.
"We said before this game that we were not going to win this game in terms of possession," Head Coach Nick Cowell said. "We just needed to keep our shape in the back and suck them in. We knew our forwards could beat their back line and we just needed to catch them on the break. Our forwards have good speed and one-on-one ability and they were able to showcase that today."
St. Edward's will be back in action Thursday when they travel to take on Dallas Baptist in a non-conference match. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Patriot Soccer Field. Live coverage can be found on the Patriot Athletic Website.
