ISABEL MORALES shot a final round 73 to move up 24 spots on the final day of the St. Edward's Invitational at the Par-70, 5,802-yard Onion Creek Country Club Tuesday morning. Winds reached 40 mph on a blustery day where temperatures were in the 40s. The Hilltoppers finished tied for fifth place.
"We have made strides over the past two days and for that I am very pleased," head coach Jennifer McNeil said. "I could see our practice plans being put into motion at many instances during the last two rounds. A few more birdies and we are right where we should be."
Morales (87-73=160) started her round on hole seven and proceeded to play steady golf with 10-straight pars before making her first bogeys on the 17
th and 18
th holes. She rebounded with a birdie on the par-4 first hole to get back a shot. Two more bogeys on holes 2 & 3 tried to ruin her round, but three-straights par coming in gave her a three-over, 73.
"I was particularly proud of Isabel's round today in less than perfect conditions," McNeil said. "She looked much more like herself today and it was nice to see her reap the reward of patience and hard work."
Glory Jangthongsiri (72-74=146) won individual honors after defeating Florida Tech's Felicia Leftinger (73-73=146) on the first playoff hole. Sarah Rotter (75-73=148) made a hole-in-one in the final round that helped her finish in a tie for third with Indianapolis' Paxton DeHaven (73-75=148).
St. Edward's (305-316=621) dropped one spot into a tie with West Texas A&M (302-319=621) for fifth place. Defending National Champion Indianapolis (299-308=607) finished in second place, while #3 Florida Tech (293-304=597) defeated all 15 teams. The score of 597 for the Panthers was a tournament record besting the old mark of 606, held by Tarleton State set in 2012.
St. Edward's was led by
SANDY LIVAS (73-80=153), who finished tied for 13
th place.
ANA SOFIA BENAVIDES (78-80=158) and
