STOCKTON, Calif. – St. Edward's junior
ISABEL MORALES led the St. Edward's Women's Golf team with a final-round 73 at the NCAA DII West Regional Wednesday morning. Her score on the Par 72, 5,931-yard Brookside Country Club course was not enough, as the Hilltoppers finished 12th, and missed out on a fourth-straight bid to the National Tournament.
Morales (80-76-73=229), who improved in every round at the tourney, started her day on the back nine. She made the turn at one-over par, but really shined in her last nine holes. Making two birdies to combat her two bogeys, Morales kept herself at one-over par to finish with a 72. She ended tied for 35
th place.
Benavides (69-71-83=223), who started the day in a three-way tie for the lead, had a great beginning to her round. The freshman played her first six holes at a one-under clip. The par-5 16th hole proved to be a tough task as she made a quadruple bogey. It was not Benavides' day, as she had a hard time finding her rhythm. She would finish tied for 18
th place, which was tops on the squad.
"This, definitely, is not the way I had envisioned our year ending," head coach Jennifer McNeil said. "It was a roller coaster of ups and downs this year, and I think we are all ready to close the door on 2015-16, and move on to 2016-17.
Tarleton State (294-288-294=876), Dallas Baptist (298-292-296=886) and West Texas A&M (298-286-306=890) all qualified as teams for the NCAA National Tournament. California Baptist's Erica Wang (75-71-70=216), Oklahoma Christian's Audrey Meisch (74-77-68=219), and Academy of Art's Sterling Hawkins (72-74-73=219) all qualified as individuals.
Also competing for the Hilltoppers were
SANDY LIVAS (77-79-77=233) who finished in 46
th place,
JESSICA TAMEN (80-78-82=240) who ended in 60
th place, and
BRIANNA VOGEL (78-81-84=243) who finished tied for 62
nd place.
The Hilltoppers end their season after making it to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the 11
th-straight year. With no seniors on the team, St. Edward's is looking to take this experience, learn from it, and get back to this spot next season with success on its mind.
