AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's University Athletics announced the hiring of Dominic Worrell as its new head athletic trainer Monday following a nationwide search.
Â
Worrell spent the last three years as the head athletic trainer at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. He brings nine years of sports medicine experience to the hilltop, along with his athletic training certification (A.T.C.) and current membership in the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA).
Â
"Dominic brings experience and clinical skills to this position that will benefit our student-athletes and further strengthen our athletic training staff," said Senior Associate Director of Athletics Melinda Terry. "I am excited to have him as a Hilltopper, and to work with him to support our coaches and students in pursuit of their goals."
Â
The Mendota, Illinois, native, will oversee sports medicine operations for all 13 of St. Edward's varsity teams, as well as cheerleading. His duties include: supervision of fulltime, student and volunteer staff, determination of sport assignments, day-to-day operations in the athletic training room, and various other duties.
Â
"I am enthusiastic to join the St. Edward's staff in this role," said Worrell. "I'd like to thank Mrs. Taylor and Ms. Terry for giving me this opportunity to be a part of the St. Edward's community. This university is clearly an institution that prides itself on doing things at a high level. I embrace the challenges of developing and maintaining those standards within the Sports Medicine department. I look forward to joining the supportive campus community and contributing to the ongoing excellence that Hilltopper Athletics continues to achieve. It is a privilege to join a very strong staff of certified athletic trainers, and I know we will be able to provide a valuable service to our student-athletes."
Â
Worrell started his professional career in 2010 as an assistant athletic trainer at Ferrum College in Ferrum, Virginia. The Panthers promoted him to head athletic trainer and director of sports medicine in 2013. During his time in Virginia, Worrell worked with 19 varsity sports, served as an adjunct instructor in the Health and Human Performance department, and helped transition athletic training in to the Panther's new athletics facility.
Â
In 2014, Worrell departed Ferrum to become the head athletic trainer and an instructor of exercise science at Buena Vista. He supervised a fulltime staff of three assistant athletic trainers, along with two graduate assistants, and multiple student athletic trainers. Worrell also oversaw coverage of 450 student-athletes and 19 varsity sports. In 2015-16, the Beaver's athletic training staff was named Athletics Department Staff of the Year.
Â
Worrell is also a Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor. He has worked with the Chicago Rush of the Arena Football League, multiple camps and tournaments, and a variety of NCAA Championship events.
Â
Worrell earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Athletic Training from Trinity International University and a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology from Michigan State University. He currently resides in southwest Austin with his dog Osiris.
