AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's defense was in postseason form, recording their 12th shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over Lubbock Christian in the Heartland Conference Tournament Semifinal.
CHIDERA ARIRIGUZO showed why she was a second team all-conference selection at the outset, holding the Lubbock Christian attack at bay despite having the wind at their back in the first half. The Hilltoppers' chances were few early but SEU turned on the afterburners in the final ten minutes, posting five corners and two shots.
Despite the aggressive attack the Hilltoppers and Chaps went into the break deadlocked at 0-0.
SEU picked up right where they left off and scored just a minute and a half into the second half.
SARAH GUNDERSON centered the ball from right of goal and found
ELIANNA CHAVEZ who buried it in the back of the net to give St. Edward's a 1-0 advantage.
The Hilltoppers didn't let off the gas, keeping LCU's Hannah Wise busy in goal. After a barrage of shots, SEU's persistence payed off as
SARAH GUNDERSON, assisted by
ISABELLA CAMARATA, continued her scoring streak and touched home the insurance goal in the 81st minute.
St. Edward's outshot Lubbock Christian 12-4 and had six more shots on goal in the match while also earning seven more corner kicks.
SEU improves to 12-4-2 on the year and advances to the Heartland Conference Championship game for the seventh consecutive year. They will face Dallas Baptist Saturday for a 2:00 pm kick.
