MGOLF Ties for 2nd at CSUEB Tourney; Constancio Places 8th

THE RUNDOWN

PLEASANTON, Calif. – St. Edward's University had its highest finish of the season with a tie for second place at Cal State-East Bay's Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout Tuesday at the Club at Ruby Hill. Freshman BEN CONSTANCIO led the Hilltoppers with his best finish of the season at tied for 8th place.
 
SEU finished only three strokes back of the winner No. 9-ranked Colorado-Colorado Springs (289-301-280-870) and tied with No. 13-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay (294-288-291-873) for second. The HIlltoppers shot the second lowest round of the tournament Tuesday with a 285, which was three under par and finished with an 873 (299-289-285).

Constancio shot season-lows in each of the first two rounds with a 70 in each round before closing the tournament with a third-round 77 for a 54-hole total of 217 (+1). The rest of the Hilltoppers turned out strong outings with CARLOS TERCERO and ANDREW SPEAR tying for 16th place at five-over par (221), and HUDSON ROSS was just one stroke behind that to tie for 22nd with a 222.
 
SEU led the tournament combined at 14-under par in Par-5 scoring and also tied for the field-lead with 29 birdies.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
• SEU's 285 was the second-lowest round of the tournament and the third-lowest round for the Hilltoppers this season.
• SEU led the 17-team field in Par 4 (+27) and Par 5 scoring (-21) for the tournament.
• BEN CONSTANCIO finished with his second-consecutive top 10 finish at a season-best tie for eighth place.
• Constancio had career college-bests of 70 in rounds one and two, and his combined 54-hole total of 217 was a season best.
• Constancio tied for the field lead in Par 5 scoring finishing at eight-under for the tournament field of 94 players.
• ANDREW SPEAR broke 70 for the second time this season with a third-round 69.
• Spear and HUDSON ROSS each had an eagle in the tournament.

SEU Head Coach Todd Ohlmeyer on the Hilltoppers' performance …
"A complete team effort this week.  I'm very proud of our play. We knew a really good round today would give us a chance and we did that.  As we have talked about all year every shot counts and this week was no different."

The Hilltoppers resume action March 12-13 in Amarillo at the NCAA Regional Preview hosted by West Texas A&M University.
