DALLAS – Chaney Brugman scored the golden goal in the 94th minute to lift Colorado School of Mines to a 3-2 victory over St. Edward's in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday at Patriot Field.
The third-seeded Orediggers (19-2-1) netted the equalizer in the 86th minute to force the extra time.
Mines jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute.
The sixth-seeded Hilltoppers (13-7-2) were unable to fully clear the ball that was in their box. Emma Peterson then took control and quickly took a left-footed shot that just went past the outstretched arms of
ANNABEL SWEENEY.
Following a halftime discussion with head coach Nick Cowell, St. Edward's immediately pulled even in the second half, as
SARAH PRESTON netted a goal in the 46th minute.
JENNA LIPSCOMB took possession of the ball and dribbled toward the left side of the box before crossing in a pass. Preston took a crack before the second hop and drilled into the back of the net for her eighth score of the season.
Preston's goal was the first allowed by the Orediggers since Oct. 20.
Nineteen minutes later, the Hilltoppers took a 2-1 advantage.
ASHLEY WILSON was able to knock the ball in the direction of
ELI CHAVEZ, who battled it away from a Mines defender at the top of the 18-yard box. Chavez collected herself within one step and used a right-footed shot to drive the ball inside the far post and past the goalkeeper for her seventh score of the campaign.
The 'Toppers held the lead for the next 20 minutes. However, in the 86th minute, Giselle Sawaged played a ball that landed behind the SEU back line, which allowed Nicole LaTourette to run on to it. LaTourette drove it into the box and then took a shot before finding the back of the net to level the score at 2-all.
Just four minutes into the extra frame, the Orediggers converted a corner kick into the game-winning score. Kaylee Kennedy received the short corner and dribbled inside the box before passing it to LaTourette who quickly played it to the front of the goal, where Brugman ran in and knocked it between two SEU defenders and into the back of the net.
Colorado School of Mines advances to play No. 2 seed Dallas Baptist on Saturday.
The loss for St. Edward's wrapped up the collegiate careers of five seniors – Lipscomb,
SYDNEY MACK,
EVELYN TIPLADY,
ASHLEY VALSIN-LUU and
INDIA WENTZ. The senior group led the Hilltoppers not only to the Lone Star Conference semifinals but also the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2016.
