AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's Softball won game two of Saturday's double-header on a squeeze bunt to clinch the series victory, winning game two 4-3 after dropping game one 6-3.
GAME 1: SEU 3 – RSU 6
Late innings lifted the Hillcats to the win in game one as they scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth before posting a three-run seventh to put SEU down 6-0 with three outs to go.
SHELBY JANDA led off the bottom half of the seventh with a single to center and was moved to second on
TY'ERYKA PRESTON's single. With one out,
KYLIE MICA sent a shot to left center to drive home both baserunners and cut the deficit to four, 6-2. Mica was brought home on a sacrifice fly to center by
KAYLA APPLEBY, but the rally was cut short with a line drive to left field.
KAROLINA RODRIGUEZ went 2-2 in game one with one walk while Janda was 2-3 at the plate with one run scored.
REAGAN CARTER suffered the loss, allowing three runs on three hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
GAME 2: SEU 4 – RSU 3
RSU struck quickly in game two, posting two runs in the first to take an early lead. SEU used a steady stream of runs to chip away at the lead. Appleby drove in Mica again in the fourth for the first SEU run and the Hilltoppers scored one in the fifth and sixth to tie the game 3-3 heading into the seventh.
After taking care of things on defense SEU went back to work at the plate. Janda reached on an error to open the inning and moved to third on
MORGAN LEWIS' single to first base.
Mica laid down the perfect bunt on a squeeze play to bring home Janda, scoring the game winning run.
Appleby and
LAUREN GARZA were both 2-3 from the plate while Mica went 2-4 with the game winning RBI.
JULISA ORTEGA earned the win, throwing seven shutout innings after entering in relief while allowing two hits with 11 strikeouts.
St. Edward's improves to 6-9 on the season and 3-4 in Heartland Conference play while handing RSU their first two conference losses of the season this weekend. SEU returns to action on Tuesday, March 12, taking on Texas A&M International in a double-header in Laredo beginning at noon.
