SOUTHLAKE – The 28th-ranked St. Edward's men's tennis squad picked up two Heartland Conference victories on Friday at the Southlake Tennis Center. The Hilltoppers knocked off Newman by a 4-1 score and then blanked UAFS, 4-0.
St. Edward's improved to 15-6 overall and 3-0 in league play.
NEWMAN RECAP
The Hilltoppers took two of three in doubles to claim the early point and then won three of four decisions in singles action to close out the match.
The duo of
ZAC ROBINSON and
NICO MERCADO earned a 6-1 win at the second doubles spot, while
MATEUS DE COL and
CHASE MOREHOUSE netted a 6-4 triumph to clinch the doubles point.
CHASE BARTLETT pushed the SEU lead to 2-0 with a straight-sets win at the top position.
GABRIEL ZUNIGA followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the second spot to make it 3-0.
The Jets (6-13, 2-1 HC) picked up their lone point at the sixth singles flight.
LOGAN BUIGNET then close out the match with a come-from-behind win in three sets at the third spot. Buignet dropped the opening frame to Blake Crawford, 6-2, but rallied for 6-2, 6-2 wins in sets two and three.
UAFS RECAP
St. Edward's cruised in its final match of the day, shutting out UAFS.
After winning the doubles point, the Hilltoppers earned three points in singles play with straight-sets victories.
CHASE BARTLETT,
GABRIEL ZUNIGA and
CHASE MOREHOUSE all were winners in singles action.
St. Edward's will return to action on Saturday, April 13, in a Heartland contest against St. Mary's. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. at the Austin Tennis Academy.
