AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's Softball seniors put on a show for their fans on the day designated to honor their time on the Hilltop, but SEU was unable to pull out both wins, winning 6-4 before narrowly falling 5-4.
GAME 1: SEU 6 – TAMIU 4
MORGAN LEWIS opened the bottom of the third with a double to left center and
KAYLA APPLEBY followed with a walk to put two baserunners on with no outs. Despite the strong start to the inning the Hilltoppers stranded their fifth and sixth baserunners of the game.
TAMIU added two in the fourth, but the Hilltoppers would not be out-done.
CALLI BIRCH and
SHELBY JANDA led off the inning with back-to-back singles and
KATHRYN CONNELLY loaded the bases with one out.
MORGAN LEWIS pushed the first run across with a single up the middle.
The scoring would not end there, however, as Appleby sailed the ball over the left field fence for a grand slam, putting SEU on top for the first time.
LAUREN GARZA then drove home
KYLIE MICA who hustled around from first base for the sixth run of the inning to put SEU's lead at three, 6-3.
REAGAN CARTER settled in to hold the Dust Devils from scoring until posting one in the seventh, but the Hilltoppers closed out the inning with their sensational defense they have been known for.
Appleby was 2-2 with four RBI, one run and two walks while Janda, Lewis, and Connelly all posted two hits in the win. Carter earned the win in the circle to move to 3-6 on the year.
GAME 2: SEU 4 – TAMIU 5
SEU jumped on the board first, taking advantage of a Dust Devil error with two outs in the second, scoring two runs on a missed throw to first base. TAMIU answered, scoring two runs in consecutive innings to go up 4-2.
VALERIE BRANT and Janda posted back-to-back doubles with one out to push one run across. A crucial double play got Texas A&M International out of the jam as the game rolled into the fifth with the Hilltoppers trailing 4-3.
TAMIU added one run in the sixth that proved to be the difference maker. St. Edward's did all they could offensively, the Dust Devils just made the plays defensively including a long relay from the left center fence that was just in time to get Birch at home.
Brant went 2-2 from the plate with two runs while Birch, Janda, and Preston were 2-3 in the game.
JULISA ORTEGA suffered the loss, falling to 3-7 on the season.
St. Edward's moves to 11-21 on the season, 7-15 in Heartland Conference play. They remain at home to face Oklahoma Christian on Wednesday for a crucial doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
