ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The St. Edward's women's tennis team reached the NCAA Division II Round of 16 for just the second time in program history. However, the 19th-ranked Hilltoppers were unable to advance past that point this season, as No. 9 Hawai'i Pacific posted a 4-0 victory on Wednesday morning at Sanlando Park.
St. Edward's picked up a win at the top doubles position, as the duo of
BETH HAYWARD and
VALENTINA MARTINEZ netted a 6-3 triumph. The nation's third-ranked doubles team ended their season with a 25-3 overall record, including a 20-1 mark this spring. Hayward and Martinez, who toppled the 21st-ranked pairing of Elodie Busson and Elisa Elhadj, were 5-0 against nationally-ranked opponents during the campaign.
The Sharks, however, rallied to win the second doubles spot, 7-5, and then took the third flight by a 7-5 score, to claim the doubles point.
Hawai'i Pacific then won at Nos. 1, 3 and 6 singles to close out the match and advance to the national quarterfinals.
The Hilltoppers season ends with 19-6 overall record. St. Edward's captured the Heartland Conference regular-season title and then defeated Angelo State for the NCAA South Central Region championship to advance to the Round of 16.
The 'Toppers will have to replace five seniors following the season –

ELISA GUILLEN,
BETH HAYWARD and
VALENTINA MARTINEZ.
