AUSTIN – St. Edward's rolled to a 5-0 victory over rival St. Mary's in a Lone Star Conference (LSC) matchup on Saturday at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
Four Hilltoppers (3-4, 2-0 LSC) scored in the contest, while the third goal of the game was credited as an own goal off a deflection by a Rattler defender.
INDIA WENTZ scored her first goal of the year in the 14th minute after heading in a corner kick service from
ELI CHAVEZ. Twenty-two minutes later
ASHLEY WILSON played the ball over to
ANNIE HALLS who struck it with her right foot from 25 yards out and scraped the bottom of the crossbar before landing on the other side of the line to give the 'Toppers a 2-0 advantage.
St. Edward's extended its lead to 3-0 in the 41st minute as a ball was played into the box and then deflected off a St. Mary's (2-5, 0-2 LSC) defender for an own goal.
The Hilltoppers had two freshmen score their first collegiate goals in the second half.
Following a foul in the box in the 71st minute,
REAGAN DYKES stepped to the spot and drilled the ball into the back of the net. Two minutes later, Wilson took the ball on the left side of the box and blasted it past the keeper for the final score of the day.
St. Edward's took 11 shots, putting seven on target during the Battle of the Saints.
ANNABEL SWEENEY and
MEGHAN DUNNING combined on the shutout, as the duo faced only three shots and each registered one save. Sweeney played the first 79 minutes, while Dunning came off the bench to preserve the clean sheet over the final 11 minutes.
The Hilltoppers will head out on the road for a pair of games next week. SEU will travel to to Oklahoma City on Thursday for a conference tilt with Oklahoma Christian. Two days later, the squad will return to Texas to place Midwestern State.
