Game Recap: Softball |

Hilltoppers split home opener

AUSTIN – St. Edward's softball came home for the first time this season and split games with Southwestern, winning game one 2-1 before dropping game two 3-2.

The Hilltoppers gave up one run in the top of the first in both games and struggled to get going offensively early in the game.

In game one it wasn't until the sixth inning that SEU was able to get on the board. JORDAN NEELY started the inning off with a single to right field and CALLI BIRCH followed with a bunt single to push pinch runner ASHLEY NASSY to third after stealing second.

GENISA MARRERO-CARTER reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases and MORGAN LEWIS drove in the first run on a walk and KATHRYN CONNELLY brought one more home on a lofty ball to left field.

The two runs proved to be enough as the SEU defense was able to close out the win.

Neely and Birch were the only Hilltoppers to log a hit and REAGAN CARTER earned the win in the circle, allowing one run on four hits with one strikeout and no walks.

After falling behind in the first inning SEU tied the game on a CAYLEI ALLEN single in the second. SU added two runs in the third and St. Edward's was only able to recoup one in the fourth to suffer the loss.

Neely was 2-2 in the game while MCKENNA LEAMON suffered the loss in the circle, allowing three runs on three hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

SEU moves to 9-5 on the season and they remain at home to open Lone Star Conference play, facing Texas A&M International on Friday, February 28 at noon for a double header.
