FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Will athletic competition be held during the Fall 2020 Semester?
A: St. Edward’s will not be participating in intercollegiate competition during the fall semester. This includes men’s and women’s cross country, women's soccer, and volleyball; as well as off-season games and scrimmages with outside competition for baseball and softball. We will watch local health guidelines, as well as LSC and NCAA guidelines, and make a decision about basketball by October 1.
Q: Will fall sports have the opportunity to compete at a different time during the year?
A: Potentially, the Lone Star Conference could shift the fall season schedule and championship to the spring. St. Edward’s Athletics Department will make every effort to reschedule fall sports for the spring term. This is subject to change due to further COVID-19 developments.
Q: Will this impact my team’s ability to compete in the postseason?
A: NCAA DII has canceled fall championships. There is potential that fall teams could compete for a Lone Star Conference Championship in the spring semester. Winter and spring championships have not been impacted at this time.
Q: How are the 2021 spring sports affected?
A: The spring sports championship seasons for 2021 have not been affected at this point, however, no outside competition will be allowed in the fall semester. Future competition will continue to be evaluated and monitored.
Q: Will there be any athletic activity during the 2020 fall semester?
A: Currently there will be no intercollegiate competition during the fall season. Team-related activities, including practices and workouts for all sports, will follow the NCAA safety guidelines and Austin Public Health restrictions.
Q: How does this affect NCAA eligibility?
A: For Division II student athletes, participation in workouts, meetings or practices in the fall semester will not trigger the use of a season of participation.
Division II student-athletes will not be charged with the use of a season for the 2020-21 academic year if their team can complete only 50% or less of the sport’s maximum contests/dates of competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Schools can self-apply a season-of-competition waiver for student-athletes, provided all of these criteria are met:
- The student-athlete’s team participated in no more than 50% of the sport’s maximum contests/dates of competition for the 2020-21 academic year due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19.
- The student-athlete used a season of competition during the 2020-21 academic year.
- The student-athlete was eligible for competition while competing during the 2020-21 academic year. Schools are also allowed to self-apply an extension of eligibility waiver (two semesters or three quarters) if one of these criteria is met:
- A student-athlete qualifies for a season-of-competition waiver as noted above.
- A student-athlete is unable to participate due to the cancellation of the sport season. A student-athlete must be otherwise eligible for competition for the 2020-21 academic year for an institution to self-apply an extension of eligibility waiver.
Q: What if I decide to take the fall semester off?
A: Please discuss with your coach and then contact Melinda Terry, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance, to discuss options. You may not participate in ANY team-related activities and/or practices if you are not enrolled as a full-time student (12 credits).
Q: Do I need to remain full-time if there will be no competition during the fall semester?
A: Yes. Any student athlete not registered full time will not be allowed to participate in any team-related activities.
Q: If I study remotely in the fall, can I still compete in the spring?
A: Yes, student athletes who are studying remotely can participate in team activities in the spring as long as they remain NCAA compliant and follow all the proper athletic training/wellness protocols.
Q: Does the University still plan on starting classes on August 24?
A: Yes. The academic schedule remains intact. The last day of fall classes is November 24 with the final week of classes and finals being completed remotely. Campus housing will remain open through the end of the semester. Please continue to monitor university messages to your St. Edward’s emails.
Q: Without Fall sports, when should I return to campus?
A: All new and returning students should have received an email from Residence Life in regards to the date and time of their assigned move-in. Any questions should be directed via email to reslife@stedwards.edu
Q: What is the process for moving into University residence halls?
A: Check your campus email. You will be receiving instructions including processes and timelines for moving in. Please be sure to read this email - it contains critical information.
Q: I prefer to complete my coursework remotely for the Fall 2020 semester, how can I set up my housing for a return to campus in the spring semester?
A: Watch for notifications that will go out in October. If housing is available for the spring, it will indicate that you can go to the housing portal and sign-up for spring housing. Spring housing cannot be guaranteed, and will depend on space availability. Furthermore, upon cancelling your housing for the fall, you forfeit your specific bed space, and there is no guarantee that it will be available in the spring semester.
Q: Will face coverings be required for workouts/practices?
A: Face coverings are required in/at all St. Edward’s facilities, at all times.
