COMMERCE, Texas – Nationally-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce proved too powerful as the Hilltoppers dropped a doubleheader Sunday to close the regular season.
GAME 1: SEU 1 – TAMUC 4
Starting pitcher
MCKENNA LEAMON was more than ready for the challenge as she took the circle in game one. Commerce took advantage of a two-out walk in the third to scored one run and held the slight advantage 1-0.
In the top of the fifth with two outs, SEU matched the Lions as
GENISA MARRERO-CARTER singled to left field, driving home
JORDAN NEELY.
Commerce knew they had to strike and did just that in the sixth, pushing across three runs to steal the win out of the Hilltoppers' grasp.
Neely went 2-3 at the plate, scoring the lone St. Edward's run. Leamon suffered the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
GAME 2: SEU – TAMUC
Commerce knew they needed to score early to fend off the Hilltoppers in game two and started the game with two runs in the first inning.
Pitcher Cadie Belle Curie entered in relief and settled in, holding the Lions scoreless in the next three innings, but TAMUC got hot again in the fifth, scoring four runs in the frame to lead 6-0.
St. Edward's was able to get one run back in the sixth on a single to left field by
LAUREN WERNING, but that is as far as the rally would go as they dropped game two.
Marrero-Carter led at the plate, going 2-2 with one walk while
LAUREN JARESH suffered the loss in the circle.
The Hilltoppers fall to 16-20 on the year and 12-18 in the Lone Star Conference. With regular season play concluded the Hilltoppers will earn a spot in the LSC Championship and will learn who they will face in the opening round when brackets are released Monday.
