TYLER, Texas – St. Edward's women's soccer ended its four-game scoring drought with a four-goal outburst but could not contain the second-ranked scoring offense in the Lone Star Conference, playing the Texas-Tyler Patriots to a 4-4 draw.
TRISTYN CABELLO scored a pair of goals, and JESSICA HYDE scored one and assisted another to KATIE GAY to achieve the Hilltoppers' most goals since putting five into the back of the net in the season opener against Newman.
Texas-Tyler struck early, creating an opportunity on a long through ball from midfield that split two defenders up a seam to Samaris Alvarado. St. Edward's keeper ABBY CARLSON moved up to stop the first shot but left the net exposed in making the save. The Hilltopper defense blocked an ensuing shot, but Sydnee Gardner corralled the loose ball and sent the ball in for the first score of the game 45 seconds into the contest.
St. Edward's responded a little more than four minutes in. A loose ball off a Texas-Tyler goal kick bounced around until it settled at the feet of CAITLYN GONZALEZ, who threaded a needle to KATIE GAY, who delivered a booming kick from just outside the far right corner of the box that rocketed past the Patriots' keeper to tie the game.
Cabello started the second half and quickly made an impact, scoring a pair of goals six minutes apart. JESSICA HYDE generated the first opportunity, making a long run from just past midfield, splitting two defenders, and delivering a pass to Cabello in stride for the one-touch goal.
A few minutes later, ELENA RAMOS BANET went up top from distance, forcing a leaping save from Patriot keeper Camri Cecil, and Cabello rushed the net to collect the loose ball and score the opportunistic goal.
Texas-Tyler cut its deficit to one on a pass from Vanessa Bart to Alexia Moreira, but Hyde answered with another long run and an ambitiously deep shot that sailed over Cecil's outstretched hands and just under the crossbar for the goal.
The Patriots cut the deficit again when Maddie Higgins collected the rebound off a Carlson save and scored, then tied the game on a series of passes form Cephana Deane to Jordan Colbert to Faith Adje for the equalizer.
With the draw, St. Edward's is not 8-3-4 on the season with a 4-2-3 conference record. The Hilltoppers will return home and play Lubbock Christina University on Saturday, celebrating the seniors before the game.
