AUSTIN -- The St. Edward's women's soccer team celebrated Homecoming with a 2-0 victory over the Texas Woman's University Pioneers, ending the regular season with a win to break a streak with three losses and three draws through October.
The Hilltoppers got on the board early, finding the back of the net at the 13:15 mark.
EMMA VIQUEZ drew a free kick by splitting a pair of defenders, getting tripped up in the middle of the field just outside the box.Â
Viquez took the free kick herself, sending it through the defensive wall. The ball trickled through, rolling to the feet of
JULIA SPIELMANN with only TWU keeper Kailey Wehrmann between her and the net. Spielmann sent the ball off her right foot to the upper left corner of the net for the game-winner.Â
St. Edward's defense kept Texas Woman's pinned in their own defensive-third, holding possession for 62 percent of the game and in the Hilltoppers' attacking half of the field for 78 percent of its possession.Â
The Hilltoppers added an insurance goal 15 minutes into the second half out of a short corner from Viquez to JESSICA HYDE. MADDI DAVIS generated the opportunity by forcing a turnover and delivering a beautiful through ball down the line to TRISTYN CABELLO, earning the corner.Â
Hyde took the short corner and delivered a ball from deep, near the sideline outside the attacking third, finding the back of the net off one hop.Â
St. Edward's wraps up the regular season with a 9-5-4 record, including 5-4-3 in conference play. The Hilltoppers will wait to see who they play in the Lone Star Conference tournament after Saturday's conference games.Â
