Hilltoppers get the LSC Sweep

April 1, 2022

Friday afternoon St. Edward's University Softball dominated the scoreboard in their double header against Western New Mexico winning, 7-3 and 26-6.

Game one:
In the first inning, the Hilltoppers got on the board early when the first four batters of the game all reached base with a leadoff double from Genisa Marrero-Carter, single by Megan Morris, two RBI double by Jordan Neely  and Valerie Brant was hit by a pitch.  Later in the inning Lauren Hoyt singled to plate Neely for a 3-0 lead.  WNMU answered with one run in the bottom of the first and then tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the third with a two-run homerun.

The Hilltoppers retook the lead 4-3 in the fourth with a lead off double by Yvonne Castillo who scored on two passed balls.
In the top of the seventh the Hilltoppers added three insurance runs on a double by Morris, a 2 RBI homerun from Neely and a solo homerun from Brant.

McKenna Leamon (8-7) pitched a complete game facing 26 batters giving just 5 hits and throwing 8 strike outs.

Game two:
Once again the Hilltoppers got on the board early scoring 7 runs in the first.  Morris doubled to left center followed by a Neely walk to set the stage for a 3 RBI homer by Brant.  An error and two walks loaded the bases for Kaylee McQuillan to send one over the centerfield fence for a grand slam.   WNMU answered with two runs on a double and sacrifice fly.

After a scoreless second and third innings, the Hilltoppers put up 16 runs in the fourth on 14 hits, including doubles from Brant and Alexis Massie and a Holt homer to take a commanding 23-2 lead.

Massie had a leadoff home run to open the fifth inning.  Singles by Connelly, Katie Dillon and Morris would plate 2 more runs bringing the score to 26-2.  In the bottom of the inning, WNM would score 4 runs on 5 hits, but it wasn't enough and the Hilltoppers took the win 26-6 to bring their overall record to 16-16.

Cadie Belle Currie (2-7) got the win after 4.1 innings giving up 7 hits and racking up 7 strikeouts.

The Hilltoppers are back in action Sunday in Odessa with a double header against University of Texas-Permian Basin.
