AUSTIN – The St. Edward's Hilltoppers women's soccer team continues to solidify itself defensively, posting its third consecutive conference clean sheet in a 1-0 victory over the Midwestern State Mustangs.
Reigning LSC Goalkeeper of the Week ABBY CARLSON had another exceptional effort, stopping four shots and breaking up several other opportunities. Midwestern State tested Carlson early, putting two shots on goal and a corner kick in the first seven minutes of play.
The Hilltoppers countered with a brilliant two-woman game between MARYANNE CROWE and ELENA RAMOS BANET down the left sideline. JESSICA HYDE triggered the possession with her physical play in the defensive midfield, taking the ball from Makenna Gainzle and getting the ball to Ramos Banet as a pressure release. Ramos Banet found Crowe in the middle of the field and sprinted down the sideline for a series of passes between the two into their attacking third.
Crowe made the final push into the deep left corner, bodying her defender to create some space and finding Ramos Banet trailing just inside the box, who froze one defender with a hesitation move and sent the ball in off the far right post for the game-winner.
St. Edward's depth wore Midwestern State down as the game went on, limiting the Mustangs to a single shot on goal and one corner kick. The Hilltoppers were able to fire off three shots on goal on a couple of ambitious attempts, and had one dangerous possession sail over the crossbar.
With their fifth consecutive win, the Hilltoppers improve to 7-1-1 with a 3-0 conference record. St. Edward's will host Texas A&M International (3-4-2, 0-2-2) on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 4:00 p.m.
