PUEBLO, Colo. – The St. Edward's Hilltoppers women's soccer team exploded for three goals in the first half against Colorado State University-Pueblo, defeating the ThunderWolves 3-1 to wrap up its two-game trip to Colorado.
St. Edward's ELENA RAMOS BANET put the Hilltoppers on the scoreboard first, scoring just under 24 minutes into the match. The Hilltoppers drew a free kick a few feet beyond their attacking third when SILLE LOENSTRUP and CSU-Pueblo's Jordin Schaller got tangled along the sideline going for the ball and the latter shoved Loenstrup.
The free kick was delivered into the middle of the 18-yard box, finding CSU-Pueblo defender Kia Comstock's heel and ricocheting back to Ramos Banet, who ran into the one-touch shot, sending the ball into the lower right corner of the net off one bounce for the score.
Both teams exchanged possessions until the Hilltoppers scored two goals in the final five minutes of the half.
EMMA VIQUEZ executed a perfect slide tackle to wrest possession away from CSU-Pueblo's Taylor Potter as the latter pushed the ball into the attacking third.
IZZY SINISCALCHI picked up the loose ball in open space and moved the ball across the midfield line before dropping it off to JULIA SPIELMANN on the left side. Spielmann went wide, then made a hard cut towards the middle, creating a passing lane to lead KATIE FITZPATRICK towards the net, who settled the ball and delivered a line drive off her left foot to the right side of the net, rocketing it past the outstretched hands of the diving keeper at the 40-minute mark.
With time winding down on the first half, the Hilltoppers pressed the ThunderWolves and reclaimed possession near midfield, pushing the ball in transition on a series of beautiful passes that ended with Viquez finding KATIE FITZPATRICK in perfect stride for the one-touch goal into the back of the next.
CSU-Pueblo's Victoria Mitrick broke up the clean sheet against St. Edward's reserve keeper, scoring on a pass from Schaller with less than four minutes remaining.
With the win, the Hilltoppers improve to 3-1-1. St. Edward's will host the University of Tampa on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 4:00 p.m.
