AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's scored a goal in the 80th minute and survived being down a man six minutes to preserve a 1-1 draw against Oklahoma Christian in the conference opener, earning one point.
Oklahoma Christian held a slight possession advantage in the first half but was conservative, keeping the ball on their defensive side with minimal push into the attacking third. Both teams held up defensively, limiting the other to three shots.
The Eagles broke through with a little more than a minute remaining in the first half, playing a long ball over the top of the defense that found its way to Joshua Waite, who made a move to clear some space and dropped the pass off to Lawson Ford, who rocketed the goal into the lower right corner from just outside the box.
Oklahoma Christian kept the pressure on in the second half with a 5-3 shot advantage and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Hilltoppers held tough and found their opportunities, getting a big play from DONOVAN EERKES-MCCARTHY, who took possession from Oklahoma Christian near midfield, got the ball to JETHRO VOURJOLO on the wing, then drew a foul just outside the box with 10 minutes remaining.
JOMMAR REYES triggered the free kick, wrapping the ball around Oklahoma Christian's defensive wall and planting it in the left corner for the equalizer.
St. Edward's momentum was short-lived, however. Vourjolo picked up his second yellow card with six minutes remaining in a match with ten cards given with six against St. Edward's. The Hilltoppers withstood a corner kick that sailed wide right, and Oklahoma Christian got called offsides in the final minute for its last push into its attacking third.
The Hilltoppers go to 0-5-3 with their second consecutive draw. St. Edward's will play on the road this weekend at UT Tyler on Saturday at 5 p.m.
