Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Jesse Blanchard

Season Ends In San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – St. Edward's women's soccer season ended in the Lone Star Conference Quarterfinal in a 2-0 loss to the second-seeded St. Mary's Rattlers.

St. Mary's pressured early, spending much of the early match in its attacking third, getting a corner kick and three shots off in the first three minutes. Two of the first three shots were ambitious attempts far off goal. A fourth shot hit the woodwork.

Ten minutes in, both teams settled into the match and found quick opportunities on counters, making long passes over the top of the defense into open space.

St. Edward's CAITLYN GONZALEZ and TRISTYN CABELLO got the ball from the midfield into the attacking third, but the Hilltoppers couldn't capitalize with a shot on goal.

Cabello got a shot in the third minute that went high and to the left, and Gonzalez sent one sailing right in the 31st minute.

The Rattlers did an excellent job getting the ball into the deep right corner of their attacking third. Still, the Hilltopper defense held its ground, stopping any potentially dangerous crosses at the point of attack and cleaning up the rest with a defensive wall.

St. Mary's threatened with a breakaway near the 20-minute mark, but RYANN JERGOVICH broke it up with a slide tackle, and St. Edward's keeper DARIA SCHLUMBOHM broke up the ensuing corner kick. The Rattlers created another breakaway with numbers on a counter, and once again, Schlumbohm stopped the shot, covering up the ball to neutralize the threat.

The second half opened similarly to the first, with St. Mary's delivering a barrage of shots. Some were ambitious and comfortably off-target. Others were closer to the mark. The Hilltoppers withstood the opening salvo and got another shot from Cabello.

St. Edward's defense held steady within the game's flow until two late fouls cost the Hilltoppers two goals. A foul in the corner of St. Edward's defensive third got the Rattlers a free kick, and Shelby Paniagua found Love Tovar for the first goal in the 76th minute.

Thirty seconds later, St. Mary's Paniagua was fouled in the box, earning a penalty kick and a second goal.

Cabello led St. Edward's with two shots. ELENA RAMOS BANET and Gonzalez each had one shot. St. Edward's ends the season with a 6-7-3 record.
