Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Eastern New Mexico

AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's softball continued its momentum from winning its road series against No. 19 Oklahoma Christian, sweeping today's home doubleheader against Eastern New Mexico to claim its second consecutive series win.

Game 1: St. Edward's 3, Eastern New Mexico 0

St. Edward's followed its familiar formula of solid pitching, stout defense, and timely hitting to defeat Eastern New Mexico 3-0 in the first game of the doubleheader.

Starting pitcher MCKENNA LEAMON pitched an absolute gem, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning and holding on for the complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts, only four walks, and two hits surrendered.

Leamon set the tone in the first inning, striking out the first two hitters. She placed her pitches with precision and power, getting the first hitter looking and blowing a fastball past the second.

St. Edward's scored first, taking advantage of back-to-back errors from third baseman Katelyn Cifuentes to lead off the bottom of the first, putting ARIANNA VIDALES and GABI LOPEZ on base.

MEGAN MORRIS tried to move both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, but Eastern New Mexico was able to put Vidales out at third on the fielder's choice.

ELLA HUTZLER followed with a single to load the bases, but JERZIE PELHAM hit a grounder to third, with Cifuentes making the throw home for the force out. The Hilltoppers finally scored when ALEXIS MASSIE drew a walk, bringing in Morris for the first run.

LAUREN HOYT hit a grounder to shortstop with the out at second to end the inning with runners stranded.

The Hilltoppers added two runs over the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, sparked by Vidales's leadoff double to left field in the fifth. Lopez moved her to third on the sacrifice bunt, and Morris drove her in with the RBI double.

Massie and Hoyt opened the bottom of the sixth with a walk and single on a bunt. Both advanced on a wild pitch and Massie scored on an RBI single from KATIE DILLON to left field.

Leamon faced some trouble in the sixth, surrendering a single and walk back-to-back with one out. But, again, the Hilltopper defense came through, with Massie fielding the ball for the unassisted force out at third, followed by Leamon striking out Taighen Whitzel to get out of the inning.

The senior pitcher opened the seventh inning by striking out Jennifer Gress, but Valeria Contreras reached on a throwing error from second, and Edyn Lopez followed with a double to left field to place runners on second and third. However, Leamon kept her composure, striking out Kianna Galindo and Torianna Borunda to end the game.

Game 2: St. Edward's 8, Eastern New Mexico 2

The bullpen and bats starred in St. Edward's 8-2 win over Eastern New Mexico, earning the team its second consecutive conference series win.

Vidales opened the game with an infield single, sending a sharp grounder to third Cifuentes couldn't field cleanly. St. Edward's leadoff hitter stole second, setting up MEGAN MORRIS's RBI double on a frozen rope to right field.

Eastern New Mexico responded immediately. Starting pitcher CADIE BELLE CURRIE hit Lopez and surrendered a single to right field by Jokaira Paredes. Galindo moved both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and Lopez scored on a wild pitch to tie the game before Currie struck out Martinez to get out of the inning.

Currie struggled in the third inning, striking out Vasquez to open the inning but hitting Ashley Nickerson and walking Gress. KYLEN PADGETT (2-0) replaced Currie and struck out two of the next three to escape the inning unscathed.

Padgett pitched three innings in relief, striking out five with one earned run surrendered on three hits with no walks.

Vidales sparked the offense again in the third inning with a leadoff single to left field. Lopez grounded to third in what should have been a fielder's choice, but Vidales reached second on a throwing error.

Morris executed a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position, and ELLA HUTZLER hit a two-out, two-RBI single to center field for the 3-1 lead.

Eastern New Mexico put two on with one out in the top of the sixth on a leadoff single from Lopez and Galindo walk. Rena Toomey replaced Padgett and induced two consecutive ground outs, with Eastern New Mexico scoring on the first.

St. Edward's offense exploded for five runs in the sixth inning on five hits. The Hilltoppers opened with three consecutive hits. Hutzler hit a leadoff infield single, Massie singled to center to put runners in the corners, and Hoyt delivered a two-RBI double to left field. After MADDY LARSON went down swinging, Dillon singled to center, and Vidales reached first on an error, scoring Hoyt.

After Lopez drew a walk, Morris hit a two-RBI single to center, and Toomey followed with a sacrifice fly RBI.

Toomey retired the side in order in the seventh to finish the save opportunity.

Morris led St. Edward's with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate with three RBIs. Hutzler hit 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Vidales was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.

St. Edward's improves to 11-6 with a 5-4 conference record. The Hilltoppers and Greyhounds will finish the series on Sunday at noon.
