Defense Shines In Softball's Win Over TAMIU

AUSTIN, Texas -- MEGAN MORRIS led a dominant defensive performance for St. Edward's, turning two of the Hilltoppers' three double plays in a 2-0 win for the home team.

CADIE BELLE CURRIE (9-3) pitched her tenth complete game of the season for a sixth shutout, striking out three with only four hits allowed with one walk.

Both defenses continued to be stingy, retiring the side in order in the first. Victoria Maldonado drew the first hit of the afternoon with a frozen rope to the deep left-field corner for a standup double in the second inning. However, Eva Cortez lined into a double play to second for the circuitous three-up, three-down inning.

Texas A&M International's Katelyn Luera reached on a walk with one out in the third and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Torres, but Maldonado grounded out to third to end the inning.

LAUREN HOYT recorded St. Edward's first hit in the bottom of the third with a leadoff bunt for a single. ALEXIS MASSIE moved Hoyt to second on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt, then Hoyt advanced to third on a HAILEY SONKA groundout. Unfortunately for St. Edward's, ARIANNA VIDALES' hit an opposite-field shot that fell foul by inches, then popped out to the shortstop.

Texas A&M International's Kristy Alanis hit a leadoff single through the middle in the fourth, but Morris quickly shut down any Dustdevil momentum by turning her second double play of the game.

St. Edward's opened the bottom of the inning with a leadoff bunt for a single for the second consecutive inning, laid down perfectly by KATIE DILLON. Morris grounded out to second, moving Dillon over in a near mirror image of the previous inning. But, this time, the Hilltoppers capitalized. JERZIE PELHAM sent a shot through the left side for the hit and advanced to second on the throw to third from the outfield.

ELLA HUTZLER followed with an RBI single to shallow right field, where Luera dove for the ball but couldn't come down with it to give St. Edward's its first run of the game and runners on the corners. The Hilltoppers followed with a double steal, exchanging an out at second for Pelham to score a second run. SLOANE HILL followed with a standup double on an opposite-field shot to the deep right corner, but Texas A&M International starting pitcher Carla Arrellano struck out the next hitter to end the run.

Dillon made a spectacular diving catch in right field to open the top of the fifth, Morris fielded another routine grounder, and Currie struck out Garcia for another three-up, three-down inning. St. Edward's put two on with back-to-back singles in the bottom of the inning but failed to plate a run.

St. Edward's retired the side in order in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Texas A&M International finally threatened in the top of the seventh with back-to-back singles from Kennedy Griego and Tajanae Davis with one out, putting runners in the corners. However, the Hilltoppers ended the game with another defensive highlight, turning a 5-3-2 double play with Victoria Maldonado grounding out to third and Hutzler throwing the runner out at home.
