SAN ANGELO, Texas – After winning the first game of the three-game series on the first day, St. Edward's softball struggled in today's doubleheader, dropping both games.
GAME 1: Angelo State 5, St. Edward's 2
Angelo State put together a big second inning, scoring four runs on four hits on its way to a 5-2 win over St. Edward's to even the series.
ALEXIS MASSIE put St. Edward's on the board first with an RBI single to center field in the first, scoring HAILEY SONKA, who reached on a walk.
Angelo State loaded the bases with one out in the second inning on a walk and two infield singles. Then, Tatiana Trotter drove in McMillan with an RBI single t through the right side, and St. Edward's pitcher MCKENNA LEAMON walked Ashlyn Lerma to score Maleya Burns. Then, after Lindsey Evans fouled out, Paxton Scheurer hit a two-RBI single to center for the 4-1 lead.
Massie drove in another run in the third, scoring HAILEY SONKA from first on an RBI double to right center.
Angelo State added another run in the sixth on an Ashton Dirner bunt for a single, scoring Layni Tanner.
Leamon pitched all six innings, surrendering five runs, six hits, and five walks with two strikeouts. Massie led St. Edward's with two hits and two RBIs.
GAME 2: Angelo State 5, St. Edward's 1
Angelo State carried the momentum into the second game, scoring five runs on nine hits to sweep the doubleheader.
Bailey Martinez delivered a two-RBI single up the middle in the third, scoring Scheurer and Lerma before getting thrown out at second.
Angelo State took advantage of two St. Edward's miscues in the fourth, scoring on an error and passed ball for the 4-0 lead. Keilei Garcia tacked on another run with a solo blast in the fifth.
GABI LOPEZ put St. Edward's on the board in the sixth with an RBI single to center field, scoring Massi, who reached on a fielder's choice.
CADIE BELLE CURRIE pitched 3.1 innings, surrendering four runs, with two earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk. KYLEN PADGETT pitched 2.2 innings in relief with two strikeouts, one run scored, and two hits.
Pelham hit 2-for-4 for St. Edward's. Lopez was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Sonka, LAUREN HOYT, and ARIANNA VIDALES each had a hit.
St. Edward's drops to 22-17 with a 16-14 record. The Hilltoppers will host West Texas A&M with a Tuesday doubleheader and a single game on Wednesday.
