The Lone Star Conference announced its 2022-23 LSC Athletic Training Staff of the Year, naming St. Edward's Athletic Training Staff the winner for institutions without football.
Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Amanda Martinez leads the athletic training operation at St. Edward's. In 2022-23 she was assisted by Abby Arrington and Shelby Stipp and Ascension Outreach Athletic Trainer William DeCraene in coverage for 12 Hilltoppers varsity sports programs.
"I am proud of our athletic training staff for being who they are and doing what they do. They earned this recognition as the LSC athletic training staff of the year," Associate Vice President for Athletics Debbie Taylor. "They are superheroes every day. They selflessly take such great care of our student-athletes, from injury prevention to injury rehabilitation and mental health. They always prioritize the health and safety of the student-athletes and work tirelessly to keep them on the playing field, court, or track. I know that the student-athletes appreciate them as well."
This is St. Edward's first time winning the honor and the 19th year the Lone Star Conference has presented the award. St. Edward's joined the Lone Star Conference in the summer of 2019.
The LSC Athletic Training Staff of the Year awards are presented annually to the top institutions as voted by the head athletic trainer of each member school. Beginning in 2019-20, one award is presented to the staff of the year from a football-playing institution and an award given to the staff of the year from a non-football-playing member.
The purpose of the LSC Athletic Training Staff of the Year award is to raise awareness of the athletic training profession. Criteria for the award includes hospitality toward visiting athletic trainers and teams; preparedness with supplies, equipment, and services for visiting athletic trainers and teams; preparedness for emergency situations; and care for injured athletes from visiting teams.
