AUSTIN, Texas – CHRISTIAN MEZAS scored a goal in the 53rd minute and
ANGEL RAMIREZ made seven critical saves to lead St. Edward's men's soccer to a 1-0 victory over the Texas A&M International Dustdevils.
St. Edward's pressured Texas A&M International early. The Hilltoppers generated five shots in the first 11 minutes, including a pair of shots on goal each from
SHUNJI WATANABE and
MATTHEW DEVANEY.
JETHRO VOURJOLO tested Dustdevils keeper Nicklas Berg-Eriksen for a fifth time in the 17th minute to no avail.
Texas A&M International threatened St. Edward's for the first time in the 21st minute out of a corner kick, but a Hilltopper defender blocked Andres Herrera's shot. The Dustdevils put their first shot on goal in the 31st minute and managed two more in the final two minutes of the half, which Ramirez all stopped.
The Dustdevils had an early corner kick and shot in the first minute of the second half, but St. Edward's countered with opportunities from
CHRISTIAN MEZAS and
TODD FULLER, leading to a Hilltopper throw-in from the corner.
JOMMAR REYES triggered the corner, finding
IRVIN ABARCA posted by the near post. Abarca headed the ball to Devaney, who put the ball down for Mezas on the far left side in front of an open net for the game-winner.
Mezas nearly added to the lead less than a minute later, putting another shot on goal saved by a Dustdevil defender with the keeper out of position. The Hilltoppers got back-to-back corner kicks out of that shot, leading to a shot on goal by
PABLO ZAVALA in the 56th minute.
St. Edward's remained aggressive over the next 15 minutes, getting shots from Watanabe and Vourjolo, a header out of a set piece that sailed high from Abarca, and shots from Devaney and
BRODY BOX.
The Hilltoppers pulled back and were more selective with their runs over the final 10 minutes. Ramirez broke up a dangerous corner,
VICENTE ALVAREZ disrupted a dangerous transition opportunity from behind before it could develop, and the Hilltoppers successfully played the ball and held it in Texas A&M International's corner to bleed the clock, drawing a pair of yellow cards in the process.
St. Edward's generated a 27-11 advantage in shots, putting 12 on goal. Watanabe led the Hilltoppers with five shots, including three on goal. Mezas scored his third goal of the season, and Devaney picked up his first assist.
The Hilltoppers improved to 4-4-3 on the season with a 2-1-2 conference record, sitting in third place in the conference standings with eight points. St. Edwards will host Oklahoma Christian on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 1:00 p.m.
