AUSTIN, Texas – VICENTE ALVAREZ scored two clutch second-half goals to earn St. Edward's men's soccer a second consecutive 2-2 draw in a contest where the Hilltoppers outshot the Greyhounds 14-4.
St. Edward's dominated possession in the first half, repeatedly pushing the ball into their attacking third. The Hilltoppers put six shots on goal, and Eastern New Mexico blocked other opportunities in the box, with keeper Milo Paci earning six of his ten saves in a busy afternoon.
The Hilltoppers appeared on the verge of scoring throughout the opening half, but Eastern New Mexico was the first to break through in the opening minutes of the second.
Eastern New Mexico won a second jump on a long Hilltopper throw-in from St. Edward's defensive midfield. Giani Mascarel controlled the second effort, split defenders, and poked the ball to Ben Sauerlander, who fired a shot midway between the center circle's edge and the box for a quick-hitting goal.
The Greyhounds carried the momentum into two more shots on goal, both stopped by
KALEO FRANCIS. St. Edward's turned to its bench and reclaimed its possession-heavy ways with
ARTHUR SOUZA,
JOMMAR REYES, and Pablo Zaval each putting a shot on goal.
Alvarez entered the game in the 72nd minute and immediately made an impact, scoring St. Edward's first goal in the 76th minute.
TODD FULLER triggered a corner kick from the bench-side, finding
IRVIN ABARCA near the far post. The 6-foot-2 center-back headed the ball down, hitting Alvarez in stride on one bounce, who delivered the ball into the back of the net with a rising knee.
Eastern New Mexico responded immediately, passing the ensuing kick-off to Kris McDonald on the back defensive line. McDonald played the ball long over the top of the Hilltopper defense to Pablo Nodar, who sprinted down the right sideline into space for the goal less than 30 seconds after the Hilltoppers tied the game.
St. Edward's upped its pressure but had two opportunities negated by offside penalties. The Hilltoppers brought
SHUNJI WATANABE and
CHRISTIAN MEZAS back in the game in the 83rd minute, and the latter found Alvarez again for the equalizer.
The play started on a long free kick triggered by Paci from the Greyhound box to past midfield.
MATTHEW DEVANEY won a pair of balls in the air, heading the second one to
IZAIAH GARZA, who got it to Fuller for the long ball over the top of the Greyhound defense.
Mezas poked the ball away from a Greyhound;
SHUNJI WATANABE trailed and delivered the ball back to Mezas, who led Alvarez into a shot from outside the box, going top-left for the score a few seconds short of the 85th minute.
St. Edward's had two more opportunities down the stretch, coming away empty on a corner and seeing a Watanabe shot sail high.
The Hilltoppers held a 14-4 shot advantage, putting 12 on goal, and had eight corner kicks to a single attempt from the Greyhounds. Souza had three shots on goal,
JETHRO VOURJOLO had two, and Alvarez scored on both of his shots for his first two scores of the season.
St. Edward's is now 3-3-3 with a 1-0-2 conference record. The Hilltoppers will travel to San Antonio on Saturday to play St. Mary's in the Battle of the Saints at 5:00 p.m.
