ODESSA, Texas – TRISTYN CABELLO scored a first-half goal, and the Hilltopper defense limited the University of Texas Permian Basin to just three shots on goal to pick up the program's fifth shutout win in six games with the 1-0 victory.
St. Edward's took the opening kick-off and quickly sent a long pass over the top of the defense for a shot from Jisell Zavaleta that sailed high in the first 12 seconds. An offside penalty short-circuited another Hilltopper opportunity in the second minute.
Texas Permian Basin threatened around eight minutes when Sophie Walker intercepted a pass played backward into the Hilltoppers' defensive third for a one-on-one opportunity against St. Edward's goalie
DARIA SCHLUMBOHM. Schlumbohm made the diving stop, and Natalia Salas's ensuing shot off the rebound ricocheted off the right woodwork.
Just before the 20th minute, Schlumbohm pulled down a long pass played into the box and punted the ball the length of the field. The Hilltoppers'
TRISTYN CABELLO and
ALYSSA GARCIA put some pressure on Texas Permian Basin in the box, with Garcia stepping in front of a pass and sending it to Cabello for the score.
Texas Permian Basin responded with two quick shots on goal in the next two minutes. Cassandra Ramirez went high, then Salas tried bottom-right, with Schlumbohm stopping both to go into the half with the 1-0 lead.
Cabello nearly had a second goal in the 58th minute, missing off the top woodwork. Schlumbohm stopped Kristel Chaves's shot on goal in the 63rd minute, and UTPB missed two shots in the closing three minutes to end the game.
St. Edward's improves to 7-7-2 with a 5-5-1 conference record after the win. The Hilltoppers will host West Texas A&M on Monday at 4:00 p.m., then close out the regular season on Thursday at Sul Ross State.
