SAN ANTONIO – St. Edward's men's soccer surrendered three goals in the second half, falling 3-1 to Midwestern State in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Semifinals.
The Hilltoppers struck quickly, scoring a goal on the game's first shot when
ARTHUR SOUZA found Matthew DeVaney, who went bottom-right into the back of the net in the seventh minute for St. Edward's lead.
St. Edward's kept the pressure on, getting a shot on goal from
CHRISTIAN MEZAS, but Midwestern keeper Daniel Robles stopped it.
IZAIAH GARZA followed with a shot in the 11th minute, and the Hilltoppers generated another opportunity out of a corner kick, then ended another with an offside penalty. Souza nearly added an insurance goal but put the shot off the left woodwork.
Liam Pritchard generated Midwestern State's first shot in the 16th minute, missing high. St. Edward's responded with shots from Mezas, Souza, and DeVaney through the 24th minute.
Midwestern State went to its bench late, and Cooper Tea responded with the Mustangs' first shot on goal in the 35th minute, which St. Edward's keeper,
ANGEL RAMIREZ, stopped. St. Edward's held an 8-3 shots advantage in the first half, taking two corners and a 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs opened the second half with three shots in the first ten minutes, including back-to-back attempts from Tea. Midwestern State finally broke through on a goal by Eduardo Cerna, assisted by Ethan Krchnak, in the 61st minute.
Both teams turned to their bench, and Midwestern State missed back-to-back shots in the 65th minute.
JETHRO VOURJOLO responded with two quick shots, including one on goal.
Midwestern State's Tea committed a foul in the 80th minute. However, the Hilltoppers played the free kick backward, and Cerna intercepted the pass and broke free for the game-winner. The Mustangs added a third goal when Cerna found Mere Escobar in the 85th minute. St. Edward's falls to 8-6-4 with the loss.
